(FFmpeg) How to copy codecs from one video to another?

Copying a codec from one video to another is easy and convenient as seen below:

 $ ffmpeg -i input.avi -c:v copy -c:a copy output.mp4

-c:v also seen as -vcodec sets the video codec, while -c:a or -acodec sets the audio codec. Adding the option copy after each results in FFMPEG using and copying the codec from the input file.

It is common to see on programming forums, such as Stack Overflow, examples where the author has copied the codec from one format type to another. More often than not, this is risky but due to programs like VLC playback isn’t halted regardless of format type + codec combinations. Below is an example of risky codec copying:

$ ffmpeg -i input.avi -vcodec copy -acodec copy output.mp4

The reason for concern is the avi format supports a wide range of codecs, DivX, Xvid, H.264, and MPEG-4 to name a few. Whereas mp4 does not natively support DivX, Xvid or other codecs. So copying video codecs blindly may result in a faulty playback.

Note: VLC might play a mp4 with a DivX codec but uploading to Instagram may not because it does not have a decoder for DivX playback.

What are all the formats FFmpeg supports?

Unlike codecs, formats are the digital input / output containers FFMPEG understands.

While an mp4 file is the extension we are used to seeing, inside contains encoded video and audio with various codecs. For example, an mp4 file might contain one of the following audio codecs: ACC, AC3, ALS, MP3, ACC or plenty more.

Depending on which video and audio codecs is used, will depend on which format the output audio or video file will be. This is not an automatic result but a manual selection so being familiar with the supported formats FFMPEG supports is necessary

 $ ffmpeg -formats

Note: Be aware that the output of this command will result in a list detailing  hundreds of FFMPEG supported formats. For the full list of supported formats, refer to the section TBD in the back of this book.

What are all the codecs FFmpeg supports?

Since codecs are the backbone of FFMPEG, it is beneficial to know how to access the full list of supported codecs. The command is as follows:

$ ffmpeg -codecs

Be aware that the output from this command will show hundreds of codecs for both audio and video. For the full list of supported codecs, refer to the section TBD in the back of this book.

How to Use FFmpeg in Python?

Command line one-liners are great for quick and one off FFMPEG experiences but sooner or later you’re going to want to start building custom applications for efficiency. FFMPEG can be used with almost any programming language with a couple of simple tricks. Some languages might even have libraries of their own to extend FFMPEG natively. Below are a few examples of various languages using FFMPEG:

Python using 3rd party library ffmpy, More information: https://pypi.org/project/ffmpy/

>>> import ffmpy
>>> ff = ffmpy.FFmpeg(
...    inputs={'input.mp4': None},
...    outputs={'output.mp3': None}
... )
>>> ff.run()

Python using os.system

>>> import os
>>> os.system("ffmpeg -i input.mp4 output.mp3")

(FFmpeg) What is a ‘codec’? Explained

FFMPEG has hundreds of different codecs to edit, convert to and play from. In your journey to mastering FFMPEG you’ll face the word ‘codec’ so often that not understanding what one is, is a disservice to yourself.

Wikipedia explains a codec as:

“… a device or computer program which encodes or decodes a digital data stream or signal. A coder encodes a data stream or a signal for transmission or storage, possibly in encrypted form, and the decoder function reverses the encoding for playback or editing.”

This book focuses on the mp3 codec for audio and H.264 (x264) codec for video. Due to their popularity and ease of use with modern software there’s rarely a disadvantage to using these codecs. For example, it’s much easier to post a mp4 file with mpeg4 codec to Instagram than it is to upload an Apple mov video.

Codecs are not the container that makes up an mp4 but the encoded data to allow mp4 files to be understood by a computer.

How to Configure FFmpeg with Extra Dependencies? –enable

Build dependencies are great additions to FFMPEG that makes the program even more powerful. These dependencies link to 3rd party tools that extend functionality or even simplify some processes. In this book there are a couple of audio / video filters that require extra dependencies to be installed. Installation is as follows:

MacOS

As of March 19th, 2020, MacOS + homebrew install has disabled native dependencies support. Luckily, thanks to a discussion on github the current work around is as follows (install all available dependencies):

brew uninstall --force --ignore-dependencies ffmpeg
brew install chromaprint amiaopensource/amiaos/decklinksdk
brew tap homebrew-ffmpeg/ffmpeg
brew upgrade homebrew-ffmpeg/ffmpeg/ffmpeg $(brew options homebrew-ffmpeg/ffmpeg/ffmpeg | grep -vE '\s' | grep -- '--with-' | grep -vi chromaprint | tr '\n' ' ')

Source discussion: https://gist.github.com/Piasy/b5dfd5c048eb69d1b91719988c0325d8

Linux

Linux users who want to configure extra dependencies are required to install from source, here’s an example of install dependencies, given from the FFMPEG wiki:

cd ~/ffmpeg_sources && \
wget -O ffmpeg-snapshot.tar.bz2 https://ffmpeg.org/releases/ffmpeg-snapshot.tar.bz2 && \
tar xjvf ffmpeg-snapshot.tar.bz2 && \
cd ffmpeg && \
PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH" PKG_CONFIG_PATH="$HOME/ffmpeg_build/lib/pkgconfig" ./configure \
  --prefix="$HOME/ffmpeg_build" \
  --pkg-config-flags="--static" \
  --extra-cflags="-I$HOME/ffmpeg_build/include" \
  --extra-ldflags="-L$HOME/ffmpeg_build/lib" \
  --extra-libs="-lpthread -lm" \
  --bindir="$HOME/bin" \
  --enable-gpl \
  --enable-libaom \
  --enable-libass \
  --enable-libfdk-aac \
  --enable-libfreetype \
  --enable-libmp3lame \
  --enable-libopus \
  --enable-libvorbis \
  --enable-libvpx \
  --enable-libx264 \
  --enable-libx265 \
  --enable-nonfree && \
PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH" make && \
make install && \

How to merge multiple mp3s into one track with FFmpeg?

This is question 80 from my up and coming FFMPEG book, come join the mailing list to stay informed on more FFMPEG tutorials and announcements about the book. Here

Merging audio with FFMPEG is one of the most searched questions on the internet and couldn’t be any easier. The only difference is a txt file with a list of mp3 tracks must be made before the merging can begin. Below is an example list inside the file “file.txt”:

file 'track1.mp3'
file 'track2.mp3'
file 'track3.mp3'

Next, using concat in the following one-liner, all 3 mp3 files can be merged into one long track:

 $ ffmpeg -f concat -i file.txt -c copy full.mp3

concat or concatenate, is the process of combining media files. In this example, exactly the same codec and parameters are required for joining.

In this example, ffmpeg lacks a specific media file as an input but a list from a external list (file.txt), this -f is used to “force” and input file.

Arguments

concat

Indicates the argument that combines multiple media files

-f

Indicates the forces an input or output

Remember when flash was a big thing? Well turns out there are still video players online that use Flash Live Video (flv) to stream video. If you run into these files from a download, you might be hard pressed to find a player that works for it. So converting to mp4 is ideal:

$ ffmpeg -i input.flv -vcodec libx264 output.mp4

NOTE: You’ll notice in this example, we had to specify a -vcodec libx264, this is good practice as the default codec (mpeg4 on some machines) for mp4 conversions might downgrade video quality.

Luckily, that’s all it takes to convert FLV to MP4. Extremely easy and quick.

‘A Book of Visual Signalwave’ my first independent success

In December of 2019, I had this idea to take japanese commercials from 1980 to 2001 and turn them into a book. The idea was simple, paint a new story with minimal changes in frame order but sparks a new emotion in a comic book format. A 30 second video might have 720 frames to tell a story. A book of visual signalwave takes a handful to tell a new one.

The initial idea was give this to the Musics the Hang Up Patreon supporters as a thank you for their support. I made the books at a small book printing shop near XiaMeiLing, China. 12 of them and shipped them back to the USA. Christmas came around, I gave away this free book and for another 2 months sat on it.

Then in February, I started getting into the flipping game on ebay but the income wasn’t as fast as I’d like. So it hit me, digital goods are so much easier to maintain, digital goods turned physical without dealing with shipping myself would be even better.

In the vaporwave scene, people love collecting physical media. For example, cassettes and vinyl in the scene are huge. So huge that some people don’t even have the means to play their music but the art and prestige of owning something from a limited release gets everyone off.

I’ve been in the vaporwave scene for over a year trying to figure out my niche as someone who doesn’t exactly produce music. I like the visual side of the scene. I like the smaller sub-genres (signalwave) even more.

So I did what made sense, and signed up with Amazon’s KDP to have them start producing my book. It was a quick process after I figured out all the book conversion stuff and February 28th, I went live with the book.

The first day sales were ok, but on March 4th things exploded. A Japanese blog picked up on the book, wrote a post about it and by the end of the day had over 300 retweets, likes and comments. This would be the first time I’d ever have a new outlet write about anything I’ve created.

The following day, I get an email from Disk Union, a japanese book distributor / store, asking to purchase 100 books. Of course I agreed, made less than 100 USD off the sale, but I was on my way.

Now I write this proudly stating in the first 2 weeks, I’ve sold over 200 copies of the book and a new drive to write more. So I’m starting a new book project I’ve had in the back of my head for a while.

A book on FFMPEG, a video and audio editing terminal software. It’s formatted in a “100 Questions answered” type book. It’ll be a great reference book for anyone interested in taking their social media game up to the next level.

If this is something you’re interested in, please sign up for email alert to start up to date on the progress. The book will be releases in the next month, you’re not going to want to miss it.

Until then, check out my first published book, “A Book of Visual Signalwave” on Amazon:
